Have tried tether with my Nikon D80, using Bridge CS5 to display photos in Raw format. Transfer works perfectly, shutter command is operational, ditto for time lapse and bracketing. A great tool, helps a lot when doing studio work.
I’m using Windows 7 & a Nikon D80. Tried 2 commercial programs + one other free one. Yours is the only solution that actually worked! Many thanks.
Works great, except I was wondering if it’s possible to get longer exposure shots? It went up to 30s on my D3000, but I’d like to go over 1m is possible.

“I’m a lot better at technology than I am at art.”
Nup, you are a true artist.
All I need is software for image review on a large screen. Your software does that and more. A+. It works for me with a D80 and Windows Vista Home.
The only thing that I can’t work out is where the “Donate to the author” button is on this website. If you can tell me where to find it, I’ll happily click it.
Best regards,
Warwick.
Installed the latest version 5.1 dev. I am getting the “pre”view after having taken the picture. And I was wondering if the software also allowes for preview before taking the picture. Feeding the image right to the computer. Or is this too much to wish for :-)! Happy for help here!
one word “Awesome” just downloaded this and within minutes it was up and running ;^)
If you do place a donate button on here let me know cos as “Warwick” said, I will happilly click on it.
I’m now one happy snapper for my next shoots ;^)
Thank you so much for this wonderful program!!! I’m using a D50; I’m just blown away by how good it is. I am having a problem on one of my comuters I use it on. It works, but there’s a glitch. When I select the destination folder, it gives me an error message (internet explorer script error, line 940, char: 2, error: object required : ‘fso’, code 0, url: file://E:\program files\DIYPhotobits.come Camera Control 5.2\camera control.hta). It asks if I want to continue running scripts, I say yes, and it works, so maybe it’s not a problem. If I disconnect the camera (turn it off), then reconnect it later to continue shooting, I need to restart DIY to get it to work, and I’m wondering if this is related. Small problem, I LOVE this software, thank you again so much.

Controla la camara desde el ordenador : Mas que Pixels
@David, when you disconnect the camera try hitting the ‘Stop Tether’ button switch the camera back on and then the ‘Start Tether’ again, had a similar problem myself and this solved it ;^)
Jon…. Thanks! I think that will probably work. As for the scripting error, I wonder if it’s internet explorer… I just loaded xp sp2 on that computer, and haven’t upgraded the internet explorer at all…wonder if it needs it. Well, as long as it works, it ROCKS. Thanks again!

Tethered Shooting | Photodesk Blog
WOW! I have been looking for something like this for a while…its perfect! Im shooting jewellery so tmy teeny tiny D60 screen doesnt cut it.
Thanks!!
I have been using this program for a while, it is great! One feature I would like a lot would be a timed shutter release control. Where the shutter is released then the desired time is passed, shutter is closed for a short time then opened again for the desired time and repeated. This would make the program a lot better geared towards star trail shots. Thanks again for the great program!
Is it possible to install and run this program at window mobile phone?
To clarify for @Derek, in astrophotography (especially when using a tracking rig), the exposures can last for fifteen or thirty minutes in order to gather enough light at the sensor. DSLR sensors get hot when operating and need to cool down between exposures. I believe the best way to describe this function would be to input total desired exposure duration, maximum shutter on time, minimum shutter off time, AKA: a duty-cycle. The script could also then output the calculated total time to take the exposure. There is only one controller to completely automate star-tracking astrophotography. This controller hasn’t been manufactured for decades so your script may become even more useful than you’d planned!
Newbie hint: use the mirror lockup feature to prevent camera jitter.
Have you considered creating a Droid app. that would allow tethered shooting? This would be graet for HDR and multiple exposures — no risk of shaking or changing camera position while scrolling the dials to adjust exposure settings.
Thanks again for your work on this over the years.
i wan’t to know if anyone tried this software on windows mobile / win ce cause if will work with win mobile it will be a great thing.
What a wonderful piece of software. It gives me everything my D60 lacks. I only wish is for a more compact GUI. I use the software with my Asus Eeee which only has a resolution of 1024×600 and based on the amount of information in the GUI, it should be possible to make it a bit more compact.
Either way, I love this piece of software 🙂
Works beautifully on my D90 tethered to a Dell 17-inch laptop running Windows 7. I use it with my DIY jig for
digitizing old 35mm slides. It’s the final piece of the puzzle.
Many thanks!

I like to have the new version for nikon d300s & d700
which one i should download for PC & Mac
oh whats the distance/range of the camera & computer?
thanks

Marla,
I think you would still have to have the camera hooked to a computer, no real benefit with droid in this mode. With the camera hooked to a computer there is also no risk of shaking the camera with this program as it controls all of the settings and trigger the shot remotely. If you are interested in how to get rid of the cable and work this program wirelessly I have a very inexpensive solution on my link and below – it will work up to about 18 feet.

Hey I would be willing to colaborate and make a windows gui for this thing.

D300 tethering « Bloggy
Tried with Windows 7 Home Premium: it recognised the camera, took remote shots but made no files.
Tried with Windows XP using VMWare on Windows 7: Worked perfectly, no issues.
Tried Windows 7 again after success with VM, and now it’s working perfectly too!
Big thanks.
I recently downloaded your app and it worked great for tethered shooting with my D70 as LR3 doesn’t support it.
I did though find the interface pretty confusing, but after noticing it was built with html/css and being a web designer, I developed a new interface for it.
I looked all over your site for an email address, but I couldn’t find one, so if you’re interested in seeing it, reply back and I’ll email you the files.
I don’t really care if you use it or not, it was more of an exercise to keep myself busy, but I thought I’d throw it out there. It will need some more developer work, as some of my front end changes broke the app. I’m not a developer so I’m pretty clueless as to how to make it work again.
Anyhow, thanks for providing this app…worked great with my D70!

Wow, this is superb, took me a while to figure it out on setup but reading what others have done I soon got it sussed. Absolutely wonderful program Many thanks to you Raymond

Great job done.
Thank you very much. This script works on D50-Win XP. So cool!!!
This naked software is so sexy.
Anyone tried wireless usb instead of cable usb?
Adam,
Yes set up a solution and I have a how to at:

Cheers,
John
Thank you Raymond!!!
Have been using v.4 and now v.5 is SO much more!
Macro shooting is now made easy with full screen preview.
a very big thank you Raymond.
just what I was looking for 🙂
Many thanks.
Waseem.
I tried using your software, on a Mac, under Parallels Desktop 6 and Windows XP SP3. While it works fine with a cable connecting the camera to the computer, it refuses to work if I use a CablesToGo wireless USB kit. The kit works fine with Nikon’s Camera Control or with other similar programs, but not with DIY.
While the program recognizes the camera connected, it refuses to download any images.
Any ideas?
john,
no real ideas here, not a mac person -;0) if it is able to send commands to the camera maybe you just need to adjust the viewing size, the wireless usb transfer rate is much slower than the hardwire.
John, thanks for your reply, appreciated.
What I’ve been told by another user of the program in NikonCafe, is that the program doesn’t show anything inside its interface, unless you shoot jpg or raw+jpg. I tried that (with a cable) and while the program showed the jpg image, it still didn’t transfer anything to the computer. I know that wireless is slower than cable, but it shouldn’t take a lot of time to transfer a picture. And I’ve waited quite a long time to see any results.
I think that DIY talks to the USB manager in a way that doesn’t allow it to recognize the wireless dongles, while other programs like Nikon’s CC does.
One more thing I forgot to mention is that I didn’t try sending any commands to the camera, I am not interested in remotely controlling a camera, only in tethered shooting, but I can try it and let you know.
UPDATE:
John, I indeed can send commands to the camera but no matter how long I wait, there is nothing transferred from the camera to the computer. Even if I shoot raw+jpg, if I use the dongles to connect the camera with the computer, nothing gets transferred.
Strange? I guess, but that’s what happens and only the developer could shed some light into this.
@John: I’ve had some XP with Mac virtualization but fell back to Boot Camp (Windows running natively on the MacTel HW) because drivers were always giving fits when virtualized*. 64-bit versions of windows are notoriously flaky with drivers for esoteric HW, even when the HW manufacturer releases a 64-bit specific driver. I finally got round to replacing Win7 64 with 32 on a used Asus laptop and lo and behold, the in-built Bluetooth began working (a Big Box store had custom ordered a batch of Asus X83-VM lappies and insisted on pre-installed Win7. )
My first attempt at using a D70s with DIY was with Vista 64. Complete Fail. Win7-64 on main desktop – camera control, but no transfer or preview. Finally tried an XP Pro 32 box and voila. Then the Win7-64 lappie joined the family – control but no transfer. Downgrade to Win7-32 – all is good.
And finally, @Raymond, the DIY developer, has absolutely no connection to the dongle integration nor does he own a set. Someone made a brief post about their experiments with an early set of dongles. @John Adams followed and then wrote up his blog post. As with any HW re-purposing, YMMV.

*Keep in mind, I haven’t bothered going this route for well over a year because my 17″ MBP mainboard fried during an EFI update (never, ever run a system update when using external video unless you want the world’s most expensive doorstop.)
CY, John
I worked Vista and XP, Vista was a no go with my D5000 and the usb but fine with the cable.
My Netbook has XP on it and works perfectly, I only use it to take my D5000 to bracketing heaven however, not transfer of images back to Netbook.
Real cool! Works with D700, D40 on W7 64bit
Thanks!
D7000, works well, one bug I’ve found, with dual slots in backup mode, the software gets tripped up on the 2 copies of the same file. It would be nice if it would just ignore the second file and continue.
I run Vista on an HP Pavilion laptop. When I download the file it attepts to open in Adobe reader. Any thoughts on what I’m doing wrong?
Thanks to all.
any chance we could make a better ui for this one? i’m willing to help. 🙂
@o2 or any developers. I thought the same thing! I had some spare time and wanted to keep busy so made a new design for it, you can download a .rar here:
http://www.twodollarpanda.com/DIYPhotoBits.com_Camera_Control_5.2.1.rar
I only do front end stuff, and some of the changes I made broke the functionality of the app. I’ve tried to get in touch with the developer, but he hasn’t replied. If you know some of the programming side, I’d love to see this app be functional and have a better interface!
Hi!! thank u so much for this prog!!! it´s awesome!!!
i been trying to shoot a time lapse. but the shutter (in the program -the DiyPhotobits 5.1 software-) allow me only 30 seconds… i would like to know if i can take pictures of 3 minutea 15 seconds… (let´s say limited bulb mode)
my camera is a Nikon D3000 and im using win 7 64bits… no problems at all.
Again… thanks for this awesome program!!!

Thank you so much for making it possible to tether a Nikon D3000! I searched a long time for such a tool you offer. Time Lapse ist just wonderful!
hi, just wanderin if the photobooth version are already done? your right your script can also use in a photobooth. thanks for this one though
hey, great work,
i have got a NIKON D3100 and i wouldnt have exspectet to be able to use a remote-programm with my cam.
i just have one PROBLEM with the programm:
negative EXPOSURE COMPENSATION values arent transfered to the cam – positve values are transfered. maybe a bug with datatypes ?
i would be great, if this is fixed in future versions.
thanks for this superior tool,
best regards, dave
